English

A good first language education is pivotal to all learning in every curriculum area.  Pupils need effective communication skills to equip them for everyday life, to function in today’s society.  At Leaden Hall we believe English is essential to the development of children as individuals, both intellectually and socially.  We hope to inspire an enthusiasm for the spoken and written word.

Mathematics

The study of Mathematics is vital to the development of a systematic and logical approach to problem solving. The effective application of Numeracy is necessary throughout most aspects of everyday life. Mathematics transcends cultural boundaries and plays an essential part in other academic disciplines. At Leaden Hall we believe that pupils should enjoy the study of Mathematics, developing confidence and assurance in the process. It is through thinking, reasoning, discussion and practice, that a true understanding of the subject develops. It contributes to an appreciation of other cultures.

Science

The study of science stimulates an awareness and understanding of and respect for the world around us. Science is an integral part of modern culture, linking practical experience with ideas and thereby engaging learners at many levels. At Leaden Hall we believe that the development of scientific skills, such as astute questioning, investigation, analysis and evaluation; is essential to the development of critical and creative thought.

Computing/IT

At Leaden Hall we believe ICT is a vital whole life skill for the 21st Century.

Children have formal ICT lessons from their earliest weeks in Nursery.  Our aim is to encourage them to extend their skills in a variety of aspects, enabling them to develop their talents and support their work in all areas of the curriculum.   We encourage them to become autonomous users of computer technology which we believe will form a foundation for their life long learning.

Our lessons form a structured environment, providing a springboard from which the children progress creatively, whilst critically evaluating their own results.  Our expectations are high and effectively challenge the children in exciting and stimulating ways.

Humanities

History fires pupils’ knowledge of the past and how that past has influenced the present helps us to understand and empathise with many aspects of today’s society, beliefs and cultures, both in Britain and the wider world.  History provides a chronological framework for the study of significant events and people.  At Leaden Hall we study History because the skills of historical research, assessing sources, weighing evidence, drawing conclusions and supporting points of view are skills that are prized in adult life.  We believe that an appreciation of our own history and that of other countries and cultures leads to informed opinion about how the events and decision-making processes of today may affect the future

Geography is the study of our environment and the physical and human forces which shape our world.   At Leaden Hall we study geography because we believe it is a body of knowledge essential to our understanding of the world both past and present, providing a framework which links many areas of study.  We believe geographical skills have wide applications in everyday life and environmental awareness is a pre-requisite for responsible participation in society.

Languages

Language learning is an educational, social and cultural experience.  Pupils learn to communicate and through becoming aware of how a foreign language works, think about their own language.  They are also able to compare and contrast similarities and differences between their own and the foreign culture and appreciate both.  There are timetabled lessons in French from the Reception class onwards, and in Year 6 there is the option to participate in a French Exchange.  Girls can also join clubs in other languages and girls in Year 6 are taught Latin.

Music

Every child has a natural inborn talent for music and at Leaden Hall we believe that music encourages self-expression, and builds confidence. The study of Music promotes multicultural awareness and sensitivity and the benefits of studying music are felt throughout the curriculum and beyond.  We have a number of visiting peripatetic teached who teach a wide range of instruments.

Art and Design Technology

At Leaden Hall we are concerned with the education of the whole child. The development of Art and Design Technology will enable the achievement of personal fulfillment and satisfaction.  Success increases self-esteem and gives pleasure in these subjects.  From a confident base the children will learn to ‘see’ as well as to ‘look’.  They will develop practical skills which will enable them to manipulate materials and express themselves creatively, responding to the abundance of visual imagery in the world around.  The study of Design Technology prepares pupils to participate in rapidly changing world.  They learn to think and intervene creatively to improve quality of life.  At Leaden Hall we teach Design Technology to help pupils become discriminating and informed users of products and to encourage innovation and creative thinking.

Physical Education

At Leaden Hall we aim to promote sport for all in order to develop confidence, create positive attitudes and a sense of well-being towards an active, healthy life style.  We provide opportunities for all pupils to participate in all physical activities in order to develop and refine their physical skills.  We aim to instil an understanding and enjoyment of physical education to ensure the continuation of physical activity in later life.  We provide opportunities for pupils to be creative, competitive and to meet different challenges as individuals, in groups and in teams.

We offer the following sports; Hockey, Netball, Lacrosse, Cross Country, Football, Rounders, Athletics, Tennis, Dance, Gymnastics and Swimming.
